Need a laugh? We all do this week, I feel. So while Nürburgring lap records, onboards with Senna and trackside videos at de-restricted Monza test days are great, the remit for today’s Elevenses couldn’t be better fulfilled than with this: truck offroad hill climbing. Because there’s a beauty in how ridiculous motorsport can be, as well as how serious.
Watch as these machines with bucket tyre treads, stripped bodywork and roaring diesel torque-monster engines attack an impossible incline. Lorries, tractors and everything in between get into low range and get stuck in. Though none are able to make the final part of the climb, some bog down tantalisingly close to the top. The winner? An eight-wheel drive truck, because the more driven wheels, the more chance of success you have. The losers? Those unfortunate few who sheered drivetrain components and tumbled back down the incline backwards with no control…
