Once the helmet goes on and the green flag is waved, it’s easy to appreciate how a little tap or rub here and there could send tempers soaring. In the DTM feature race at Zandvoort in 2001, tempers didn’t so much soar but launch and orbit the moon.
Up front was Christian Abt in his Audi TT-R, behind was Uwe Alzen in his Mercedes CLK AMG DTM. Alzen had a clear pace advantage. Abt didn’t want to give up his first feature race win, and on the last lap the pair engaged in a fierce contest. First a tap from Alzen, then another nudge just moments later, and from there it’s clear that neither will feature on the other’s Christmas card list ever again. The gap across the finish line was 0.3 seconds, but we won’t tell you who won. What we will say is that the drama didn’t finish at the chequered flag…
