Video: The Porsche 910 has one of the most glorious flat-six engines ever

Underneath the 910 is very much an evolution of the equally under-remembered 906. It was not the most successful car of its time, being outclassed by Ford's GT40 and Ferrari's 206P Dino, however it did bring a momentous result for the still-fledgling Stuttgart outfit, triumphant in the all-important home event of 1967, the Nürburgring 1,000km. But by the time everyone moved on the La Sarthe and the Le Mans 24, the 910 was already on its way out.

Which would be a sad end to what is a great looking and sounding car. The 910 ran with both six- and eight-cylinder engines (both flat) in period. And today we're riding on board one fitted with the glorious 2.0-litre six in the 2019 Whitsun Trophy at the Goodwood Revival.

But it isn't just the fact that this is a Porsche 910 that makes this video great. Oh no, actually it's the fact that there are two Porsche 910s in this video that makes it great. And not only are they on track together, they are engaged in a pretty titanic battle for supremacy.

This is a long clip, so we'll prewarn you that there is a safety car period in the middle, but don't let that put you off. Rainer Becker, who we ride with, is putting on quite a show for us and the packed Revival crowds, so even if you need to whizz through that short safety car period, this is a gripping watch. And hopefully one that brings you away with a much greater affinity for the Porsche 910.
