James Cottingham is a familiar name on GRR, and when you virtually climb onboard with him it’s easy to see why. Just two Elevenses ago, he took us for a terrifying drive in a tiny Cobra, and now we find ourselves at the other end of the racing spectrum, aboard a 2001 Dallara Oreca SP2 during this year’s Monza Historic.
In pole position of the Endurance Racing Legends grid, Cottingham flies around the 3.6-mile circuit at a pace so fast it looks sped up. With his needle tipping off the odometer at more than 300km/h and exceeding 2G, the accomplished driver makes light work of Monza’s 11 tight turns.
Within the space of a lap and a half, he has passed several opponents, the Judd GV4 V10 propelling the Proto B-class car furiously. It’s little surprise, then, that Cottingham took victory in not one but both of the Endurance Legend races at the Peter Auto event.
