No matter how good of a driver or rider you think you are, there is something that separates us from them. By ‘them’ I mean the professionals, the people that are born to race, that spend their life doing this. Nothing rams that home and indeed, nothing will get your pulse racing this morning, like a good old-fashioned saves compilation.
From Speedway to NASCAR, the Isle of Man TT to rallying, from JGTC to F1, there’s no end to the extraordinary saves these racers pull off. Some are scarcely believable even as you watch them. One of our favourites also happens to be one of the most recent, a massive slide and save by Felice Jelmini in the Clio cup, while holding on to the lead – there’s nothing like using the length of your car to block the overtaking line. The skids are a bit of fun but some of the bike saves, we really can’t believe. It’s heart-in-your-throat stuff as they toss left and right, as riders all but come off, only to recover their machines and continue. To not only recover, but then to have the nerve to race on, is what separates us from them.
