Pastrana’s out the traps first as the American – who’d just made history landing the first motorcycle double backflip – puts in a solid effort on the loose gravel and Tarmac sections in front of a packed stadium at the Los Angeles’ Home Depot Center.
Next, it’s McRae’s turn, showing us the difference between a good rally driver and a World Rally Champion; he kisses barriers and brushes walls as his Subaru uses every inch of the available track. Visibly faster than Pastrana, McRae looks to have the event all sewn up until he starts his second lap of the track, showing too much steering lock as he lands from the jump; his left wheel catches the dirt, digging in and rolling the car.
Even then, it’s not over. McRae’s car emerges from the cloud of dust, four-wheel spinning as he launches himself towards the finish line. In the end, in classic McRae style, he takes second place, less than a second behind Pastrana, despite putting his car on its roof. Incredible.
