Take a classic Toro Rosso Formula 1 car, sling it into a field of vastly differing performance, from GP2 to Formula Renault, and fire it round a track that was never intended to contain something quite so quick. The results are staggering.
Firstly, Boss GP might be simultaneously the most ridiculous and most incredible thing in motorsport. That this V10-engined, 200mph racing car has been allowed to race on circuits like Assen, which would otherwise never have seen F1 action, is something to be celebrated. In years gone by, the cars that have taken part have reached from this 2006 Toro Rosso to a 1997 Benneton, a 2004 Jaguar and many, many other categories of racing.
It’s no surprise really that this, by far and away the most capable car ever to set a lap at Assen, absolutely obliterated the lap record when it turned up for the Boss GP round in 2023. In the hands of Ingo Gerstl, its superiority is obvious, but the speed he’s able to carry through the corners is outrageous, even at what is probably a pretty conservative pace.
Aside from all that, isn’t this just a lame excuse to get these cars out on track, so that we can hear the sound of that Cosworth V10, absolutely screaming up to its 17,000rpm rev limit? It’s little wonder the stands are packed as we fly down the start-finish straight, this car must have been extraordinary.
