We’re at that point now where we’re just long enough past the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, that we’re really starting to miss it. So it’s nice when we see a new Bozzy video come up in our subscriptions, especially when it focuses on a car as cool as Rickard Rydell’s howling Volvo S40 super tourer from the late 1990s.
Because this is super touring, the engine displaces two litres, but because it’s Volvo in the 1990s that 2.0-litre engine is a yowling naturally-aspirated five-cylinder. This thing really could out scream half of 2022’s monstrous Michelin Supercar Run. It was with this car that Rydell actually secured the 1998 British Touring Car Championship. Of course these cars were spectacularly sophisticated and expensive, so the class wasn’t to last in this form, but good grief, what a golden era for tin top racing. We’re just glad we’re still able to hear and see these things being driven close to the limit on our Hill once a year.
