Video: Watch Richard Burns thrash a rally Legacy

21st December 2021

It’s amazing to see how the greats cut their teeth. Take Richard Burns, 2001 world rally champion, who in this film is attacking the Mintex British National Rally Championship. With a Prodrive-supported Subaru Legacy he’d go on to win, nine years before his World Rally Championship title victory.

Joining him are Ford Sierra Cosworths, Toyota Celicas, Lancia Deltas, Opel Mantas and even MG Metro 6R4s. As ever rallying is a motorsport of attrition, with cars losing power, developing misfires and dropping engines. Though he’d go on to win the overall title, Burns didn’t do so well in round six, yielding the two stop steps on the podium to a pair of 6R4s. Almost 30 years ago… Who fancies a Christmas day blat through the woods in a rally car?
