Storm Alex has well and truly taken us for a ride this weekend, with strong winds and torrential rain sweeping much of the country. Understandably, it was a duvet weekend for many of us, with the TV trained on none other than the Talladega Superspeedway, for the NASCAR YellaWood 500. And while the weather across the pond was slightly more agreeable, it has been historically proven that rain does not stop play for NASCAR.
Don’t believe us? Feast your eyes on 10 minutes of rain-soaked racing action, from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve all the way back in August 2008 to the Mid-Ohio Sports car course eight years later to the month. From the trackside cameras, the video cuts to a terrifying onboard, showing just how poor the visibility is at breakneck speeds.
With a wet track comes crashes, and this video is full of skids and shunts – some small, some serious. It’s a testament to the dedication, skill and downright doggedness of NASCAR drivers.
