IndyCar has revealed it’s 2022 race calendar, with big changes to the number of double-header events and the first race moved back almost two months into February.
Unlike 2021, there will only be a single double-header round, at the returning-for-’22 Iowa Speedway, with Texas and Detroit reverting to a single race weekend format. Iowa returns to the calendar after a year away to host a two-race weekend in July.
Other format changes include a move for the opening event at St Petersburg, which will take place in February, while the Grand Prix of Long Beach moves back to its more usual Spring calendar position in April after moving to become the closing round of the 2021 season.
The 2022 season will see seven road courses, five ovals and five street courses used, an addition of one oval over 2021. Two races will still be held at the Indianapolis road course while the Detroit round on Belle Isle now reverts to its more traditional spot as the round after the Indy 500.
Laguna Seca will regain its position as the last race of the season, bringing the 2022 campaign to a close on 11th September while the race on the streets of Toronto will return should border conditions allow – this year’s only scheduled Canadian round was cancelled as the Canada/US border remained closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This schedule continues to build on the growth and momentum the NTT IndyCar Series has achieved, especially in 2021,” said Penske Entertainment Corp. president and CEO Mark Miles. “Our drivers and teams will give the fans a strong, earlier start with six consecutive races on NBC, building even more anticipation for the crown jewel of the Indianapolis 500 in May.
“Our summer schedule also is full of action, with no extended breaks in the calendar, leading into the crowning of a champion on the West Coast with our last two races also on NBC. This is an excellent schedule for the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series championship.”

The 2022 Indy 500 is on Sunday 29th May 2022, and it’ll be the 106th running of the legendary race. While the month of May is no longer the long-term project for teams that the Indy 500 once was, teams will still spend two weeks solidly at The Brickyard through practice, qualifying, and the squeaky bum time that is Bump Day.
The 2021 Indy 500 was won by Hélio Castroneves. While this was his fourth win at the 500 Castroneves was taking part in only his first race of the 2021 IndyCar season, having been let go from his full-time Penske IndyCar seat at the end of 2020.
