2024 Formula E drivers and teams

The 2024 Formula E grid is complete with all 22 drivers confirmed for Season 10 of the all-electric world championship. Reighning champion Jake Dennis will remain with Andretti to defend his title, while former champion Nyck de Vries will return to the sport with Mahindra after his unsuccessful spell in Formula 1. Here's everything you need to know about the drivers and teams for Formula E 2024.

NIO 333 changes name to ERT for 2024 Formula E season

Updated: Friday 20th October 2023 at 13:45. The NIO 333 Formula E team will race as ERT for the 2024 season after its partnership with the Chinese EV brand came to an end.

The team won the first ever Formula E series with Nelson Piquet Jr. during which time it was called China Racing for the first six rounds and then NEXTEV TCR for the final four. The NIO name joined for the 2016/17 season and has remained in various guises ever since.

Those early successes haven’t been repeated, with no more wins registered and the team eventually slipping to the back of the pack by the 2020/21 season. But last season, with Sergio Sette Camara and Dan Ticktum at the wheel it registered its best results for several seasons, picking up 42 points and climbing to ninth in the standings.

The team, which is based at Silverstone, has recently had new investment from an unnamed source, and will start the new season as ERT – standing for Electric Racing Team – with the same driver pairing.

ERT is the only team that develops its own powertrain independently from an OEM.

Wehrlein and Da Costa retained at Porsche for 2024 Formula E season

Updated: Tuesday 17th October 2023 at 13:45. The 2024 Formula E grid has been completed after Porsche became the final team to announce its driver line-up, confirming it will stick with the same drivers for the new season.

Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa were first paired at the German manufacturer in 2023 and claimed four victories between them in an up and down season. Three of those victories went to Wehrlein, who was seen as a championship contender until Porsche’s form failed in the last third of the year. Da Costa’s one victory came at the Cape Town event as Porsche struggled with consistent competitiveness compared to its rivals.

Elsewhere Nio will race with Sergio Sette Camara and Dan Ticktum for a second season, while Robin Frijns will partner Sebastien Buemi at Envision and Norman Nato joins champion Jake Dennis at Andretti.

Lucas di Grassi returns to ABT Cupra

Updated Monday 3rd October. Lucas di Grassi will be rejoining ABT Cupra in Formula E after short stints with Rokit Venturi Racing and Mahindra Racing in the '21-'22 season and '22-'23 season respectively. Both driver and team will be hoping for a return to famous winning ways, with di Grassi securing a driver’s championship back in the 2016-'17 season and helping ABT on their way to three second-place championship finishes and a team’s championship victory in the '17-'18 season.

Of course these were back in the Schaeffler and Audi days before ABT became ABT Cupra Formula E for the '22-'23 season. There will be some work to be done for both driver and team, with ABT Cupra finishing 11th in the last season and di Grassi finishing 15th driving a Mahindra. The team had planned on having di Grassi longer term, at least for the following season, when they brought him on board for the '22-'23 season.

ABT still use Mahindra power in 2024 but are expected to swap out for Porsche power post-2024. Lucas di Grassi has said too that he’ll be back for ‘season 10 and more’, so he’ll be betting on improved performance in the medium term. In related news, di Grassi will be joining Nico Müller on the ABT Cupra team, who stays on after his debut in 2023.

Maserati sign Daruvula for 2024 Formula E season

Updated: Wednesday 27th September at 16:30. Three-time F2 race-winner Jehan Daruvula will race for Maserati MSG in Formula E in 2024, replacing the outgoing Edoardo Mortara – whose departure was announced last week.

Daruvula acted as Mahindra’s reserve driver during the 2023 Formula E season. He took part in the Berlin rookie test, and will make his racing debut in 2024 after four years in F2.

He will partner Maximilian Guenther in the team’s second season, meaning there are now three teams still to confirm their new line-ups. The series’ pre-season testing commences on 23rd October at Valencia.

Nyck de Vries returns to Formula E with Mahindra

Updated: Wednesday 27th September 2023 at 12:00. The 2020/21 Formula E world champion Nyck de Vries has signed a contract to return to the sport in 2024 with Mahindra. He has been announced alongside Edoardo Mortara, who will also join the team after leaving Maserati at the end of the 2023 season.

De Vries returns to Formula E after an unsuccessful spell with AlphaTauri in Formula 1, where he was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo after the British Grand Prix following a dissapointing start to the season.

Mortara has become renowned as one of the best drivers in Formula E. He was runner-up to his new team-mate in 2021 before challenging for the title again the following year with four victories. He struggled with Maserati last season and scored no wins.

2024 is set to be a development year for Mahindra. The team has struggled with its Gen3 car so far, and is building towards a big upturn in form in 2025.

Mortara leaves Maserati

Updated: Monday 21st September 2023. Eduardo Mortara will not race for Maserati MSG in the Formula E championship in 2024 after splitting with the team he spent six years with.

Having joined in 2017 when it was Venturi, Mortara went on to take 13 podiums and six victories, including four in its final year as Venturi.

But he struggled with the switch to Gen3, failing to finish in the top three in any race in 2023 and ending up 14th in the championship with just 39 points while his team-mate was 7th and took a victory.

It has not been confirmed who will replace Mortara at the team.

Rowland returns to Formula E with Nissan

Updated: Wednesday 30th August 2023 at 11:15. Oliver Rowland will race again in Formula E after Nissan announced the British racer would replace Norman Nato in its line-up.

Rowland has raced for Nissan before, as a member of the team from 2018-2021 during which time he scored five podiums and won one of the multiple Berlin races that ended the season in 2020.

Rowland had joined Mahindra in 2022 but struggled, managing just a single podium in 2022 and leaving the team part-way through 2023. He’ll partner Sacha Fenestraz at the team.

Frenchman Fenestraz was beaten by his more experienced team-mate Nato in 2023, but the Japanese team has elected to retain the talent that Tommaso Volpe, Nissan Team Principal, described as “raw”.

Sam Bird joins McLaren Formula E team

Updated: Wednesday 23rd August at 11:15. Sam Bird will replace Rene Rast at the McLaren Formula E team for 2024. The Brit, who has raced in every single season of Formula E so far, left Jaguar at the end of 2023, following a difficult third year with the British team.

His place was taken by series runner-up Nick Cassidy, but Bird’s time in the Formula E wilderness has been short as the 36-year-old’s drive at McLaren was announced just a week after the news of Rast’s departure.

Speaking of the move, Bird said: “I’m super excited to get going with the McLaren Formula E Team. Becoming part of a team with so much heritage and prestige as the McLaren Racing family feels special.”

Hughes re-signs with McLaren Formula E

Updated: Monday 21st August 2023 at 16:40. Jake Hughes will continue to race for the McLaren Formula E team in 2024 after signing a new contract. The 29-year-old impressed in his debut season, challenging toward the front of the field right from his and the team’s first race.

Hughes took pole at round three in Diriyah and then started on pole again in Monaco, even leading the standings for part of the season before McLaren faded as a team and Hughes ended up finishing 12th in the championship. No driver has been confirmed as Hughes team-mate at McLaren after the departure of Rene Rast was confirmed earlier this week.

Rast leaves McLaren

Updated: Rene Rast has departed the McLaren Formula E team. He was widely expected to leave the seat after an unsuccessful first season in the electric racing championship and will now continue his career with BMW in sportscars – for which he signed after leaving Audi in 2022.

Rast's two seasons in Formula E (in 2021 with Audi and 2023 with McLaren) brought very mixed successes. He achieved two podiums, one per season, but was beaten by his team-mate both times and failed to score a point in the last 10 races of the 2023 season.

McLaren has not announced the German's replacement for 2024.

A tradition in Formula E circles, the grid for next year is made up almost completely of question marks. A few drivers are definitely signed to agreements for next year, but several, including some long-standing Formula E competitors, and former champions, remain to be confirmed.

Which drivers are confirmed for Formula E 2024?

Let’s start with the totally confirmed and definitely on the grid drivers… all four of them (as of 7th August 2023). Mitch Evans confirmed that he had re-signed for Jaguar shortly after the season finale in London. The New Zealander has been with the British manufacturer since it joined the sport in 2016 and has grown into a regular title challenger. He took his first Formula E win in the 2018/19 season and in the last two years has picked up four wins and finished in the top three. Others will have been sniffing around the man from Auckland, but Jaguar moved quickly to secure him on a “multi-year deal”.

Evans will be joined by one of his biggest title rivals in 2023. Nick Cassidy, who came so incredibly close to beating Jake Dennis to the title, will leave the Envision team and join Jaguar for 2024. Cassidy’s title challenge was hampered by collisions with his own existing team-mate, and with new team-mate Evans, which took him out of contention in the last few rounds of the season. It will be interesting to see how Jaguar manages the balance of having two drivers who both expect to challenge for the Formula E crown. The news means that Jaguar is the first Formula E team to confirm its full driver line-up for 2024.

Sebastian Buemi enjoyed something of a Formula E renaissance in 2023 after leaving Nissan and joining Envision. The Swiss multiple World Endurance Champion might not have won a race last season, but he took his first podium since 2020 and jumped from successive 21st and 15th place championship finishes to earn sixth. He will return to Envision for another season after signing a multi-year deal at the start of 2023.

Finally, and most obviously perhaps, the new champion Jake Dennis is staying exactly where he is. After two seasons with the factory BMW team, which brought three wins and a lot of promise, a switch to Andretti and Porsche power for 2023 brought an extraordinary run of consistency and a first Formula E title for a British driver. He might have only won two races, but Dennis finished second seven times and added two more third places en route to his title. 

A mid-season wobble of four non-scores from Hyderabad to the first Berlin race wasn’t enough to blunt his and Avalanche Andretti’s challenge and the Nuneaton native won the title with a race to spare. Unsurprisingly, Andretti and Dennis decided very quickly to extend their partnership, ready to try and do it again.

Which drivers are leaving Formula E teams?

And what of the rest? Well, it’s all quite up in the air. We do know a couple of drivers have left their current teams. Robin Frijns - often a man to drag an independent car into a competitive position - has left Abt. He’s signed with BMW as a factory driver, and is expected to race in the World Endurance Championship with WRT next year. Not totally ruling him out of a Formula E return, but showing his focus might be elsewhere.

Sam Bird - one of Formula E’s most successful drivers and a constant on the grid since day one has left his seat at Jaguar after three seasons. Bird has 11 victories and 26 podium finishes from his time in Formula E, but a big news switch to Jaguar only elicited two wins, both in his first season, and this year has been largely headlined by twice taking out his championship-contending team-mate. The news that Bird would be looking for pastures new came swiftly after the season ended, and rumours abound now that the former WEC LMP2 champion will join McLaren.

As above, Rene Rast is not set for a seat in the McLaren Formula E team for the next season.

Who else is racing in Formula E in 2024?

And the rest? Well, nothing is confirmed. 

2022 F2 champion and Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich has driven a Formula E car this season and will be in contention for a seat in 2024. He tested for Maserati this season, and while team stalwart Edoardo Mortara is believed to have a contract for 2024, there’s pressure on the Swiss-Italian-French driver. Team-mate Maximillian Guenther only had a one-year deal joining the team extra late after Nyck De Vries took his chance in F1 with AlphaTauri but took the team’s first win at Jakarta and outscored his team-mate heavily. 

DS has also hinted heavily that it will be back with both double champion Jean-Eric Vergne and 2022 champ Stoffel Vandoorne. Meanwhile Porsche’s driver pairing of Antonio Felix Da Costa will most likely return. Fellow Porsche factory driver Andre Lotterer, who switched to Andretti this year, is most likely off to concentrate on his sportscar career with the 963 in the World Endurance Championship.

Once those blocks fall into place then we should have a much clearer idea of what the new grid will look like, driver-wise, but for now it’s a mystery.

What teams are racing in Formula E in 2024?

This one is a lot more clear than the 2024 Formula E drivers’ market. Because it’s all the same teams. Yes, for once no new teams are arriving and no OEMs are leaving the sport. Maserati, McLaren and Cupra have only just completed their first Formula E seasons, Jaguar is committed for the foreseeable future, DS and Penske have only just hooked up, Nissan seems set for the long haul and Porsche has just confirmed its future for at least two years and signed up to help the development of the Gen 4 car. Mahindra and Nio show little sign of quitting and Envision and Andretti were title contenders in 2023.
