How do you make a GT racing car look slow? F1? LMP1? Both are correct and frankly, around a circuit, you’d imagine these are the only options. They’re not. For here we have the McMurtry, the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard-winning monster that sucks onto the ground and delivers savage electric power.
This is a clip from a Silverstone testing session of McMurtry’s Spéirling Pure, a version of the car that’s actually wider and faster than the FOS record-beater. Here we see Max Chilton pushing the McMurtry to the limit, if only while using 80 per cent of its potential downforce and electric performance… The result is that a McLaren 720S GT3 Evo is made to look like a Toyota MR2 with a bolt-on wing and a dodgy MOT, as the McMurtry shows it a clean pair of slicks and a fairly volcanic stream of underfloor dust.
McMurtry claims that apex speeds are even quicker than Formula 1 on a qualifying lap already, even with the wick turned down by 20 per cent. Around the Silverstone GP circuit, the car managed a 1:40.92, including three overtakes, with the company saying “it’s exciting to consider what the ultimate potential could be”. They’re damn right…
