In January it was announced that an Esports round would be taking place as a points-scoring event in conjunction with each of the five 2021 World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup races. Now, new details have emerged on exactly what role the Assetto Corsa Competizione-based Esports races will have in the points. Welcome to the ‘Fanatec Points Boost’.

One driver from each team making a full entry in the Pro and Silver Cup classes will be required to take part in an Esports race on-location at each of the Endurance Cup’s five rounds at Monza, Paul Ricard, the Spa 24 Hours, Nürburgring, and Barcelona.

The top three teams of each one-hour round will be able to get the ‘Fanatec Points Boost’ – named after the title sponsor – on a 3-2-1 basis, which will add to their GTWCE standing. Overall, if one team wins each of the five races, that team stands to add 15 points to their Championship tally – no small pickings.

Why won’t it be a driver from every individual car and why aren’t there points up for grabs for the Drivers’ Championship?  This is due to a  limitation in the number of simulators. More than 24 would have been ‘impossible to organise’, according to Stephane Ratel, series boss.

Ratel, an Esports convert over the last few years, now sees the integration of real and virtual world motorsport only increasing. What would you think of a future where drivers in simulators competing in the real races?

Welcome to FOS Future Lab where we report on the latest visions of future technology. We'll be boldly covering flying cars, hoverboards, jetpacks and spaceships with plenty of down to earth topics in between.
