It’s based on the latest version of Ford’s famous muscle car, the Mustang Dark Horse and will be powered by a Coyote-derived 5.4-litre V8 engine. It will be engineered according to the new GT3 regulations, with a specially developed aero package and carbon fibre body panels. This reveal-spec car is also showcasing updated logos for the Ford Performance brand, which will extend existing relationships with two key partners for its GT3 programme.

Multimatic returns to assist Ford’s endurance racing effort once again, having also been involved In the Ford GT project that ended back in 2019. Meanwhile, M-Sport, a long-time partner for Ford in WRC, will also be on hand to build the new V8 engines that will sit under the bonnet of the Mustang GT3 car.

It’s not just Ford that will be running this new car, though, it is fully intended to be sold to customer teams around the world, the first of which to be confirmed for the Mustang GT3 is Proton, which is incidentally also set to race a Porsche 963 in the hypercar class from Monza this year. Proton is set to enter two Mustang GT3s in the WEC, which will include the Le Mans 24 Hours next June.

Ford is so far saving its own works programme for IMSA, where it will field two Mustang GT3s in the GTD Pro class with Multimatic Motorsports, beginning with the first endurance race of the year at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The more affordable GT3 class looks set to expand the third tier of endurance racing for 2024 after numbers have dwindled during the GTE era. Mercedes has voiced an interest in entering its own GT3 car, while cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Chevrolet, BMW, Lamborghini and Aston Martin are also likely to be lining up on the grid in the WEC next year.
