You certainly can’t accuse Formula E of lacking ambition. Its relentless charge to establish itself as a major motorsport player continues with the official reveal of the new Gen3 Evo car that will make its competitive debut in 2025.
This latest chapter in the quickly advancing development of Formula E racing cars sees the all-electric series become faster than Formula 1, at least in the acceleration stakes. The Gen3 Evo machine sprints from 0-62mph in 1.86 seconds in certain conditions, around half a second quicker than a current F1 car.
That figure has been made possible by a new all-wheel-drive system that helps the drivers get far better traction. It will be available for use during race starts, qualifying duels and when drivers use attack mode. Its impact ought to be most recognisable during races when the performance advantage for attack mode is expected to be augmented. It sounds like this change in particular will be the one to look out for next season.
The Evo name refers to the fact that this new car is ultimately an evolution of the Gen3 Formula E car that first raced in 2023, and overall performance gains are said to be around two per cent. It’s estimated a typical lap of Monaco will be 0.2 seconds quicker in 2025.
Among the major changes are tweaks to the bodywork. Formula E is a spec series, with all teams racing the same chassis, and in 2025 the Gen3 Evo car will bring a more aerodynamic package with a more substantial front wing and small changes to the rear end.
The tyres will be new as well. Gen3 Evo cars will run on Hankook tyres delivering between five-ten per cent more grip. They’ll also be more sustainable, made up of 35 per cent recycled or sustainable materials, an increase of nine per cent over the previous tyre spec.
Jeff Dodds, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E said: "The Gen3 Evo heralds a ground-breaking chapter in the evolution of Formula E, embodying our dedication to innovation and high performance achieved sustainably.”
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President, FIA added: “I would like to thank both FIA and Formula E teams for the hard work which underlines our shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable motorsport, while delivering competitive racing.”
Formula E’s new Gen3 Evo car was launched ahead of the Monaco E-Prix this weekend.
