Maserati is making a return to racing in 2023 with an entry to the 2023 FIA Formula E World Championship. This will make Maserati the first Italian brand to make an entry into the electric-powered single-seater series, which will be in its ninth year in 2023.

While a world away from the marque’s GT1 efforts with the MC12 (see the wild video below) or its ‘50s Formula 1 heyday, Formula E is entirely in keeping with the marque’s burgeoning electrification strategy. By the time the Maserati Formula E car is set to race, it’ll be well on its way to offering a line-up of premium EV models, including electric variants of the MC20 supercar, an all-electric SUV called the Grecale and an electric-powered next-generation GranTurismo family of super GTs.

Maserati’s inaugural year will also be the first for the third generation of Formula E racing car, which will be the lightest, fastest and most powerful yet, packing around 470PS (346kW) and capable of 200mph.

“We are very proud to be back where we belong as protagonists in the world of racing,” said Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO.

“We are powered by passion and innovative by nature. We have a long history of world-class excellence in competition and we are ready to drive performance in the future.”
