Porsche Vision Gran Turismo concept revealed | FOS Future Lab

Porsche has partnered up with Gran Turismo on a new Vision Gran Turismo project that you’ll be able to drive on GT7 when it arrives on Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 in March 2022. This all-electric supercar strikes the perfect balance between a Vision flight of fancy and a supercar Porsche could be selling in 2025, and adorns the cover of the hotly-anticipated new title.

Porsche is a latecomer to the Vision Gran Turismo project, which started back in 2013 and the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo, with marques from Honda to Bugatti, Daihatsu to Lamborghini, joining the fray since. Porsche’s entry for 2022 is well-proportioned, elegant and unlike some entries in the series, couldn’t be mistaken for anything other than what it is.

Proportions and styling tropes typical of Porsche are present and correct but appropriately exaggerated. It’s as if a Taycan and a 918 Spyder had a secret all-electric lovechild. The haunches are right, the glasshouse curvaceous. The light bar and enormous diffuser divide the rear perfectly and the lower front lights leave a purer nose somewhat reminiscent of the light-less 908s and particularly the 909 Bergspyder.

Not so conventional is how you get in – check out that fighter jet-style pop-up canopy! On the inside, the Porsche Vision GT goes a bit more sci-fi in its PlayStation exploration, with a retro-futuristic see-through instrument binnacle, a cuboidal steering wheel and minimal trimmings.

In terms of what’s going on underneath, no specs have been revealed. The Vision Gran Turismo cars have played host to some truly fanciful powertrains, specifications and figures but we suspect the Porsche will be on the side of realism. We’re expecting somewhere in the region of the Mission R Concept’s circa-1,000PS (735kW) maximum output from a similar twin-motor setup. Like the Mission R, the Vision GT is a look into a possible future of electric motorsport, so it would make sense for the two to share more than just a vision.

“The appeal of a Porsche comes from its purist design,” says Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital. “And in terms of engineering expertise, both we and Porsche follow the same perfectionist philosophy. We share the same passion for racing and are looking to the future of the car.”

The Vision GT is the latest chapter in the long story of Porsche in games and the first to be designed purely for use in one. Following the marque’s long-standing exclusive tie-up with the Need for Speed franchise the marque’s presence on a variety of games has increased markedly.

“We can engage young and digital target groups in the place where their automotive dreams are born: the world of gaming,” says Robert Ader, Vice President Marketing at Porsche AG. “The partnership with Polyphony Digital and ‘Gran Turismo’ is a perfect fit for Porsche, because motorsport – whether real or virtual – is part of our DNA.”
