Reigning Formula E world champion Pascal Wehrlein will race in purple during the 2024/25 season as Porsche unveils a striking new livery at the beginning of the sport’s new era.
The new look accompanies the arrival of the brand new Gen3 Evo machine set to make its competitive debut at the first round of the season in Sao Paulo, and sees the Porsche team swap out its traditional black, white and red colour scheme for this eye-catching new purple getup.
It’s designed to symbolise Porsche’s continued motivation to develop its electric production cars, as the new Taycan Turbo GT is also available in these colours.
“We build future sports cars, so we also want our appearance to be progressive,” Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, said. “The young and innovative Formula E is an excellent platform for promoting our electric production sportscars.
"The preparation for the season thus far fills me with confidence that not only do we look good, but we can also build on the successes of last season. The bar has been set high: With Pascal as the world champion, we are at the pinnacle of Porsche’s formula racing history to date.”
Porsche came close to claiming all three championships in 2024 as it won the most races with drivers Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa. Wehrlein completed a brilliantly consistent campaign to wrap up his first drivers’ world title, while the team was just barely beaten to both the teams’ and manufacturers’ crowns by Jaguar.
Aside from a new livery, the new Porsche 99X Gen3 Evo will feature an updated powertrain alongside a host of new spec improvements set to be introduced in this new era of Formula E.
The Andretti team will once again make use of Porsche’s latest powertrain, while the newly named Kiro Race Co. will run the 2023/24-spec system.
Porsche Team Principal, Florian Modlinger, said: “The biggest development task was and is the implementation of the temporary all-wheel drive. Since the hardware was already available for Gen3, a huge amount of work has gone into aligning the software.
"On the one hand we want to maximise acceleration and cornering speeds with the all-wheel drive. On the other hand, the goal is to not consume too much energy and to keep the car balance to the liking of the drivers. A task that is also relevant for our sportscars for the road.”
The Gen3 Evo cars are set to be a major deviation from the previous cars, and the drivers have already been busy getting to grips with the new systems ahead of official pre-season testing in November. Reigning Formula E champion, Pascal Wehrlein, said: “The new Porsche 99X Electric is a very cool car. I love the colours so much that I designed my helmet the same way.
“It also goes without saying that I am proud to now have #1 on the nose of my car. I want to defend my title and the preparations for the new season are going according to plan.”
His team-mate, Antonio Felix da Costa, added: “We are excited to see where we are at. The all-wheel drive, the new tyres, and the comprehensive overhaul of our own components may shake things up a bit, even though there aren’t any major changes to the regulations.
“I’m optimistic and am pleased that we will be lining up in Sao Paulo again at the beginning of December. Hopefully the fans will love our new colours.”
