Robert Kubica, the former F1 race-winner and current WEC LMP2 class champion, has joined AF Corse in what looks to be preparation for a campaign in next year’s World Endurance Championship behind the wheel of a Ferrari 499P Le Mans Hypercar.
He’s expected to compete as a customer entrant alongside a pair of factory cars – an idea muted by Ferrari sportscar head honcho Antonello Coletta at the Bahrain WEC earlier this month. The team will confirm its plans in the coming weeks.
AF Corse boss Amato Ferrari said it is “a great honour to welcome a driver of Robert’s calibre to our family”. Adding that Kubica’s “talent and great professionalism will bring new added value to our team.”
Kubica, who won the Canadian Grand Prix with BMW Sauber in 2008, said: “I’m happy that my path and the path of AF Corse will be the same next season. AF is one of the most successful teams ever in motorsport: I’m sure we’ll do a great job together. What’s more, I’m back in an Italian team, which is no small matter.”
