In an ideal world the end to your 24-hour race should be fairly relaxing. The finishing places should have been fairly set for at least an hour at this point, so you can relax into your final stint and nurse it home.
As much was decidedly *not* the case in the LMP2 class at Daytona last year, where the battle for victory came down to a skirmish on the final run round the banking.
Getting a great run out of the Le Mans chicane was James Allen who was in hot pursuit of Ben Hanley. Grabbing a draft from the leading LMP3 car, Allen draws side-by-side with Hanley mere yards ahead of the finish… after a full 24 hours of racing. It’s a literal photo finish with just 0.016 of a second in it. Enough for Allen to claim victory. Oh the pain Hanley must have felt. Such is the power of a strong corner exit, it can literally change how history is made…
