Having just got back from a European jaunt and my first to the Nürburgring, I can confirm it’s a nerve-racking place to even visit, let alone drive, let alone be driven at. This is pertinent to today’s video, given it’s perhaps the biggest thrill and biggest fright anyone is liable to get at the Green Hell: being a passenger for a hot lap around the Nordschleife, alongside an F1 driver at full attack.
The car is a 911 GT3 RS, the driver is F1 ace Alex Albon and the passenger is one Liam Lawson, a Kiwi racing driver on the up himself, currently racing in Super Formula, with previous in Formula 4, 3, 2 and more. The worst passengers are racing drivers, because they want to be in control, so Liam is a bit jumpy even next to a driver as capable as Albon.
The two joke that the GT3 is ‘not that fast’, before tucking into the left-right-left before the first proper corner of the Tourist circuit. Needless to say, it’s not long before they hit plenty of traffic, through which Albon deftly dances. Both are suitably thrilled throughout, as the car slithers around, with Albon diving from apex to apex.
At the end Lawson comments ‘there was one serious moment where I thought we actually might crash’. ‘Were you freaked out?’ he asks Albon, to which the F1 ace replies, ‘oh yeah, massively. I hated it’.
