His ride for the occasion, while still a Hyundai, doesn’t have an awful lot in common with the rally cars to which he’s accustomed. Rather, it’s a special time attack version of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5N. In terms of power, astonishingly, it’s only 37PS (27kW) up on the standard 650PS (478kW) car – that’s still utterly nuts.
On the outside however, it sports the kind of aero that would be claiming roadside victims down your local high street if it were allowed on a street car. While based on the street car, this 5N has been properly stripped out and hunkered down, with that Pikes Peak-specific aero and slick tyres.
Sordo naturally takes to the 5N TA like a duck to water and after overcoming a few teething issues, he posts a stonking time of 9:30.852.
