What's the most eye-opening form of motorsport in the world? F1? Sportscars? Drifting? NASCAR? Well, having watched this video of Fernando Alonso, a man with no shortage of bravery, driving something he'd never driven before, we're going to posit that the answer is: V8 Supercars.
Yes, Australia's premier touring car series, featuring lightweight chassis, rear-wheel drive and massive V8 engines, certainly looks like the one to really set your heart racing. There's more evidence than just this video – see any driver who has attempted to switch to V8s and spent years trying to get it right – but we think Fernando's reactions here are a pretty good start.
With normal driver Thomas Randle in the passenger seat, two-time F1 champion – then racing for Alpine – had a go in the big Ford Mustang around the Grand Prix circuit at Albert Park.
While he's obviously not fully on it, having only just experienced the car for the first time, we suggest you watch the Spaniard's eyes, always expressive, as they get very wide through the corners. Alonso has shown that he can handle all kinds of racing cars, leading the Indy 500 and winning the Le Mans 24 Hours, but a V8 supercar can still get his heart going.
