With that in mind, it’s not so surprising to see him here, strengthening ties with the Silver Arrows and driving the Mercedes GT3 EVO during a test day at Imola back in March. Even more so, considering the two other drivers with their name and flag over the driver’s door are one T. Wolff, and M. Antonelli – Andrea’s father, Marco, owner of the team running the car: Antonelli Racing.
The car itself has a 6.3-litre V8 engine, producing 558PS (410kW) and 650Nm (479lb ft) with a six-speed racing gearbox, and you can see it being carefully looked over by mechanics at the start of this video while Antonelli chats with motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi, before his helmet goes on and it’s time for business.
This video provides a great insight behind the scenes, from the car being rolled out of the garage to the track-ready Pirellis being fitted and the car finally lowered, ready to go. And off young Antonelli goes, down the pit lane and onto the track, where cameras fixed to a point on the main straight provide incredibly close coverage of the action, with a little wobble courtesy of the sheer force of each car dashing past. There are shots from chicanes, where Antontelli, with the boldness of youth, throws the car over each apex and we’re showered with the sparks (and slow-motion replays) of his efforts.
Then it’s back to the pits, before another outing; testing ran all day in Imola, evidenced by the video darkening with the setting of the sun, and we could watch every second of it. Alas, this seven-minute burst of action will have to do for today.
