Robert Kubica’s racing career has taken a few interesting turns over the past decade. Since his initial career was curtailed by that awful crash in 2011, he has competed in more rallying, made an incredible return to Formula 1 with Williams, won the European Le Mans Series, and competed in LMP2 in the World Endurance Championship. But in between all that, he also spent a year racing in DTM.
While results didn’t particularly go his way, Kubica did at least have the chance to get stuck into the hard and fast style of touring car racing, and from the evidence on display here, he enjoyed himself a great deal. The opening rounds of the 2020 DTM season took place at Spa, and Kubica cut his teeth during this duel with Harrison Newey, son of Adrian, at the wheel of the ART BMW M4.
Considering these cars are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, they don’t half sound the part. There’s no shortage of power, with speeds exceeding 170mph on the Kemmel Straight. It’s a fascinating battle as Kubica scopes his prey and gradually closes the gap over the course of the lap. The fight culminates in both drivers heading down to Eau Rouge side by side. It’s exciting stuff!
