Tomorrow we return to the mighty Daytona International Speedway for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, America’s greatest endurance race. The GTP machinery is back for its sophomore season with new privateers and a year’s learnings under the team’s belts. GTD Will be back again on full song too, with the Mustang GT3 joining the party for 2024.
In anticipation of the first race of the IMSA calendar, we’ve been trawling videos from last year, including this 20-minute belter of an onboard, riding with Renger Van Der Zande at the wheel of the yellow Cadillac V-Series.R.
It all starts off rather serenely as we sit patiently during a pitstop, but then, a word of warning to any headphone users around the 40-second mark, that massive 5.5-litre, naturally aspirated V8 booms into life.
From then on it's all about making progress, and Van Der Zande in the big Cadi absolutely scythes through the traffic, up on the banking, through the chicanes and around the infield. The difference in pace between this GTP monster and the GT cars is profound and definitely juxtaposed with the guttural sound of a good old-fashioned monster V8.
It’s almost hypnotic, watching the lights dance past, glazing over the V-Series.R's yellow paint and carbon dashboard. You can see how the drivers just get into a trance, dig in and crack on. We can’t wait to watch it all over again this weekend for the 2024 Daytona 24 hours.
