It’s a truly heart-stopping moment when you spin any car, as it’s usually a very sudden change of feeling totally in control, to being totally out of control. One moment, you’re pursuing your line, extracting as much performance as possible, the next, your car is stepping out of line and before you know it, you’e backwards. This one, however, takes things to another level.
For a kickoff, we’re in a Radical SR3, which isn’t exactly a big soft squidgy BMW M5 that’s going to go around at a nice leisurely rate. It’s going fast and it happens in a blink of an eye. It’s also especially fast given that the car is in this moment lapping Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, a swooping, flowing circuit that demands pace in order to extract more pace, especially from something downforce dependent like this Radical.
The car goes into the upward swooping right hander at over 120mph, snapping as it crests the curve, swinging this way, then that, then backwards, but not before bricking the Michelin GT slicks with a nice set of flat spots. Then again, a good view of the looming circuit walls either side as it goes around is enough to remind you, a few dead slicks is getting off lightly with this one.
