Let’s assume you’ve come to the correct conclusion that track-prepared road cars are a half-way house when it comes to really enjoying circuit driving and honing your skills. If you were to actually buy a car for use on track, with no restrictions, would you take a modern F1 car? Probably not. They’re tricky, over-complicated and don’t sound all that good.
It begs the question, what is the ideal track car? You probably want a single-seater platform, for minimum weight and maximum downforce. But you also want a fun engine. You want the modern equivalent of an F5000 car, really. Well, leave it to the Aussies to provide just that. This is S5000. Think Formula 3, only with a 5.2-litre Ford V8…
Indeed, riding on board in this video is at first a bit weird. We see a modern single-seater, but we hear what appears to be a Mustang with straight pipes. Nope, this is S5000, and isn’t it just glorious? The driver Nathan Byrd looks like he knows how to handle it too, navigating the American Summit Point Circuit with aplomb being careful to deploy the full force of that monster mill only where it’s needed. Yup, we want one of these. What a thing!
