What is the most motorsport fun you can have indoors? The answer will surprise you… In a diversion from the norm, in today’s Elevenses we’re taking you for a ride in one of motorcycling’s most extreme race series.
Known as Supercross, it’s effectively a condensed version of Motocross, where competitors course around a short, convoluted circuit – often situated in an indoor stadium.
Huge jumps, steep berms and tight, twisting turns characterise the race, with competitors physically jostling one another to get ahead, and catching huge air on rolling jumps. It’s an intense, noisy, benzine-scented spectacular, and best viewed from the bleachers.
However, in the absence of a packed grandstand, GoPro has invited us aboard with American racer Malcolm Stewart during round five of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Series in Indianapolis, Indiana. Competing in the second heat of the 450cc class, Stewart takes no prisoners in an enthusiastic eight laps, as he cuts his way through his competition, from 20th to third. How he manages is? Skill, determination and a fearlessness of the highest order. We’re hooked…
