The Gran Turismo movie trailer is here. And it is… interesting. It tells the story of Jann Mardenborough’s move from Gran Turismo player to real racing driver, via the GT Academy programme, and stars the Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom and Stanger Things’ David Harbour.
What we can definitely say is that the story has been fictionalised to a large degree. We’re not sure how much shouting Jann Mardenborough went through during the GT Academy but Archie Madekwe, who plays the fictional character based on Mardenborough, certainly seems to.
There’s also a lot of Nissan GTRs – Nissan after all funded the programme – and even more LMP3 cars, which seem to be standing in for the major classes at Le Mans. What there isn’t, from this showing, is the Le Mans track itself, which seems to have been replaced by the Hungaroring with its kerbs painted in the famous Le Mans blue and yellow.
We at GRR are not ones for cinema criticism, but the office consensus seems to be that it doesn’t look like the greatest film ever made. That said, there aren’t enough motorsport films in the world, so maybe Gran Turismo can change all that. We shall see.
