Mike Whiddett is a fan favourite at Goodwood. His Mazda RX-7 FD being sent up the Hill during the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard whilst looking mostly through the side-window never gets old. If you hadn’t recognised the name, you may know him by the nickname ‘Mad Mike’. When he’s not drifting at FOS, he’s travelling the world playing with his fleet of outrageous machinery. Here, we find him in New Zealand at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park.
His vehicle of choice is his ludicrous ‘MADCAB’ – a heavily modified 1987 Mazda 929. Replacing the V6 with a turbo-powered 13b JC Cosmo block is just the start of the long list of mods, but they all combine to create the perfect car for a drift taxi competition. You know the video is going to be good when it opens with Mike following a Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R for a tandem drift.
When the car has 420PS (309kW) at 19psi boost, it’s going to take a fair bit of skill to keep the car under control and luckily Mad Mike has that in spades - although he may lose control toward the end...
