Video: WRC onboards side-by-side
If you weren’t aware of how talented Thierry Neuville is, don’t worry, we have the perfect video illustration. We often see side-by side-action from the Formula 1 races to show the minute differences between driver’s lap times, but rarely do we have the pleasure in rally.
This video of Neuville and Teemu Suninen, both in Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC cars at the Monza Rally in 2021, shows how close stage times can be, even over long periods of time and a huge numbers of variables. One of the main ones that affects Neuville is the heavy front damage he sustained in the previous stage, leaving him with little to no downforce from the front of the car. Somehow, he doesn’t let this affect his stage time and stays with the performance of Suninen and in fact, sets a faster time for the whole stage despite the damage.
The footage is mesmerising, as you can see the different inputs each driver is making on the same course and how that affects their respective times. Despite never winning the WRC driver’s title, this footage demonstrates why he’s managed to finish second place in the championship no less than five times.
