2022 Father’s Day gift guide

16th May 2022
Simon Ostler

Father’s Day is fast approaching. It always manages to catch us by surprise, so this year we’re getting well and truly ahead of the game and setting out some gift ideas nice and early – at the time of writing at least – which will perfect for anyone whose dad is a bit of a motoring nut.

If, like so many dads, yours is particularly difficult to buy for, we’re confident there’s going to be something here that will tick the right boxes. We’ve covered a good range of budgets too, stretching between a cheerful £15, and quite a bit more than that if your dad is particularly deserving of a treat.

Goodwood Revival Tickets

The Goodwood Revival appeals to such a broad audience that we feel it’s more than likely your dad will find something there to enjoy. Of course, he will be treated to the best historic motorsport action on the planet, but there is plenty to get stuck into besides the on-track entertainment.

For three days, the Goodwood Motor Circuit is transformed into a time capsule that brilliantly reflects how it would have looked during its original period of operation during the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Not only does the venue look fantastic, everyone in attendance is also encouraged to embrace the vintage theme, so once you step through the entry gates it’s quite easy to forget what century you’re living in. Whether your dad is fan of vintage fashion, swinging ‘60s rock and roll, or simply enjoys getting dressed up for an occasion, tickets to the Revival is bound to be his favourite fathers’ day gift.

Revival tickets are still available in good numbers for now, but that availability won’t last long, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. You can check the Goodwood website for availability and to purchase your tickets.

If your dad already has tickets to the Revival, you might instead want to buy him something suitable to wear. While there are plenty of vintage styles he could look to replicate, he might be more interested in fitting into the motorsport side of things.

In which case, you can do little better than this set of classic motorsport overalls resplendent with the GRRC logo. Serving as a strong alternative to a tweed jacket, this look is perfectly suited to the Revival ethos, and will help your dad fit in perfectly with his vintage surroundings. Wearing these also means he can get his hands dirty among all the grease and grime of the motorsport paddocks without having to worry about ruining his pristine ‘50s blazer.

BTCC tickets

A weekend spent at a BTCC event is always one of the highlights of the year if you’re lucky enough to attend. When you consider extraordinarily low price of tickets compared to a trip to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, there really is no reason not to travel to at least one of the UK’s best motorsport venues.

Aside from the price, BTCC racing always throws up immense excitement and drama, and the 2022 season is promising just that. A long list of extremely talented drivers in one of the most competitive fields we’ve seen looks set to deliver a thrilling battle for the championship.

For the sake of this list, we’ve chosen to head down to Thruxton to spend the August Bank Holiday as it was intended, but you can by all means head over to the BTCC website and pick the event that works best for you and Pops.

McLaren gifts

Perhaps your dad is a passionate McLaren fan? While the keys to an Artura might be slightly out of reach, there are plenty of other McLaren gift ideas that we think will go down just as well… maybe.

If he likes to travel, the McLaren luggage collection is bound to appeal. There are four items to choose from, whether it’s the four-wheel expandable carry-on suitcase, or the ‘Torque Sling’ (whatever that means) your dad’s travel needs will be met in style. Prices for these are enough for a small holiday in themselves mind – the suitcase goes for £1,245 while the sling is yours for £455.

If travel is not so much his thing, you could instead turn to the far more affordable McLaren sportswear range. Our favourite is the dashing orange t-shirt on sale for £55, but we understand if you’re simply unable to turn down the gilet.

GRRC Fellowship

If your dad is a motorsport fan, why not give the gift of motorsport? The GRRC Fellowship will be a fantastic way for the recipient to immerse themselves in the events here at Goodwood, while they can also make the most of additional perks including exclusive content here on Goodwood Road & Racing.

The list of benefits afford to the Fellowship includes the chance to attend the GRRC-exclusive Goodwood Members’ Meeting, early-bird tickets to both the Festival of Speed and Revival, and a 15 per cent discount on Ultimate Driving Experiences at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

All you have to do is purchase a £46 Fellowship voucher for a 12-month Fellowship subscription. You can even opt to have the voucher wrapped in a Goodwood branded box for an extra sense of occasion. You can click here to find out all the details.

Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta 1:8 scale replica

If there are any extra-special fathers out there who deserve to be spoiled this year, we’ve gone all out with this idea. Your dad might deserve a Ferrari 250 GT, but in the absence of such a car being available, why not treat him to this enormous replica instead?

It’s a 1:8 scale of a SWB Ferrari that raced at Le Mans and won the Goodwood TT in 1961 in the hands of Stirling Moss. It’s resplendent in the famous Rob Walker livery and features all of the fine details of the original car – even the interior is brilliantly recreated.

This is a beautiful hand-crafted model, built by extremely talented people at Amalgam. Manufacture will be limited to just 99 examples, so exclusivity is guaranteed, you’ll just need to find a shelf that’s big enough to display it, because it measures around 60cm (24 inches) in length.

There is the small issue of price… it costs £10,990. We did say we were going all out.

Goodwood Festival of Speed 25th Anniversary Book

Any fan of cars and motorsport will have their lives improved by this brilliant piece of Goodwood memorabilia. The Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard turned 25 years old in 2018, and this book was lovingly curated to commemorate the occasion.

It’s a fantastic 296-page hardback almanac detailing all of the finest moments from 25 years of the Festival of Speed, reminiscing all of the best cars and drivers that have graced the famous Goodwood Hill.

If your dad enjoys reading, and he enjoys cars, this is probably the perfect Father’s Day gift, and it’s available for only £15! Nice and affordable.
