A 700PS Aston Martin DBX is on the way

Aston Martin has teased the arrival of a new high-performance variant of its DBX luxury SUV, in a cryptic video that visually showed very little but revealed quite a lot.

Firstly, the lurid green colouring in the graphics and the car that was teased suggest that this new DBX could carry AMR badging in some way or another. The colour is normally only associated with Aston’s more focused models.

Then there’s the message of the teaser. Aston has said in no uncertain terms that this will be “the world’s most powerful luxury SUV”. Tall billing, given the 670PS (492kW) output of Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Taller still if Aston is counting the 700PS+ (514kW) Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk and Dodge Durango Hellcat in that mix. Regardless, we can more or less safely bet whatever this high-performance DBX is called and whatever powers it, it’ll pack over 700PS (514kW).

This brings into sharp focus the nature of the familiar-sounding 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, packing a bit more aggression than the unit in the standard DBX. The V12 from the DBS was expected to be transplanted into a high-performance version of the DBX and would indeed easily produce the requisite performance numbers for the most powerful SUV in the world.

Unless this video is a red herring, though, the V8 is assured, which is odd. Why? A 4.0-litre unit with over 700PS would trounce even Mercedes-AMG’s own applications (minus the hopped-up AMG GT Black Series)... unless it were hybridised. The only other instance of that is in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance with its 840PS+ (617kW) output.

Regardless, unless Aston is mistaken, this DBX will have over 670PS. Quite how, quite what it’s called and quite what it looks like, will remain a mystery until the car’s reveal on 1st February.
