Put a big, fat marker in your diary on Thursday 21st July: the all-new Honda Civic Type R is being revealed at 04:00 European time, or 03:00 UK time. Worth staying up for? Absolutely.
Yes, it’s really happening, the next-generation Civic Type R is about to be unveiled, with Honda choosing today as the time to break the news as it’s exactly 50 years to the day since the first generation Honda Civic went on sale.
Although the 11th generation Honda Civic is now hybrid-only, we expect the sixth-generation Type R, said to be named the ‘FL5’, will remain petrol-powered only, likely with an overhauled version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine we saw in the previous-generation, UK-built FK8 Type R and the FK2 before that. We also expect it to remain front-wheel-drive and to use a six-speed manual gearbox.
Honda has given us a single teaser image to get excited about, and it doesn’t show an awful lot, but the classic Type R hallmarks are there, most notable the red Type R and Honda badging. We can also see a honeycomb front grille and a more aggressive front splitter and bumper. The bonnet, which featured a scoop on the FK8, has been blacked out entirely. We’re now counting down the days…
