Aston Martin looks to Lucid-powered electric future

We’ve not long bid farewell to Aston Martin’s V12, but progress is relentless. Now, the marque is looking forward to – and giving a bit of insight on – its plans for an electric future. All-electric Astons are coming and here are the new details.

The big news is that Aston is forging a new relationship with Lucid Group for electric powertrain tech, inclusive of batteries and motors. Yes, that Lucid. Does that mean a new 1,200PS Rapide is coming, in the form of a re-skinned Lucid Air? Not quite. Aston intends develop an all-new EV platform in-house, albeit with current and future powertrain and battery tech supplied by Lucid.

“The supply agreement with Lucid is a game changer for the future EV-led growth of Aston Martin,” said Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman.

“Based on our strategy and requirements, we selected Lucid, gaining access to the industry’s highest performance and most innovative technologies for our future BEV products.”

Lucid in doesn’t mean Mercedes out, because Aston Martin has also reaffirmed its relationship with its long-time parts supplier and part-owner. Mercedes is set to continue providing Aston Martin with powertrain hardware, from ICE, to hybrid and electric tech.

The goal of both the new Lucid partnership and the continuing Mercedes deal? Electrified Astons that are at the pinnacle of contemporary packaging, efficiency and performance metrics. Aston also wants to make sure its EVs are dynamically engaging, with talk already of twin-motor tech allowing variable torque vectoring.

So when will we see these electrified Astons? A plug-in hybrid DBX is shortly to come, as is the Valhalla hybrid hypercar. The marque says that by 2026, all Aston Martin model lines will feature an electrified powertrain option.

As for all-electric GTs? Well, the Aston Martin DB12 is freshly revealed and a new Vantage is shortly to follow. Soonest, it’ll be the DBS successor, no earlier than 2025. The teaser image Aston has shown certainly depicts the lines of a strong-haunched super GT. By 2030, Aston wants its core range to be fully electrified.
