The Audi E-Tron has today been updated, with a new name, improved range and updated looks. Meet the Audi Q8 E-Tron and SQ8 E-Tron, as Audi officially makes its flagship SUV range whole.

This isn’t to say the E-Tron now looks like the Q8. It still very much looks like its own model, which is somewhat confusing in itself. Regardless the refreshed look is pleasant, with new bumper treatments front and rear and new width-spanning lighting for its snout.

The looks aren’t the important bit though, aside from improvements in aerodynamics and drag reduction. What should come as an entirely welcome upgrade, especially to existing E-Tron owners, is the boost in range. The standard Q8 E-Tron and Sportback now get 281 and 290-mile ranges respectively, while the 55 and S versions get 330 and 343-mile ranges in respective SUV and Sportback forms thanks to their new 106kWh battery. Battery charging performance is up too, with the standard car now good for 150kW charging and higher performance models good for 170kW. That’s good for adding around 240 miles of range in 30 minutes.

Speaking of higher performance models, there is of course the SQ8 E-Tron to consider, which is the flagship of the range. Even with its 503PS (370kW), it’s rated on the WLTP cycle as good for 284 miles of range. Of course, that won’t be happening if you’re testing its accelerative props or putting its revised twin 98kW rear motors with improved torque vectoring to the test.

Interesting for those who like to consider the net carbon emissions of their vehicles (not just tailpipe) is the fact that Audi claims production of the Q8 E-Tron will be certified as net-carbon-neutral for European and USA customers. Each will also come with recycled materials used in the sound-deadening, as well as the carpeting. S-Line cars get synthetic leather and Dinamica sports seats too.

So in its transition to being part of the Q8 family, has the E-Tron become a viable EV in terms of range and usability for you? It’s certainly no longer the awkward pioneer in Audi’s EV range to our eyes anymore and is a worthwhile riposte to Mercedes with the EQC and especially BMW with the iX.
