BMW M4 updates bring more power and some subtle style tweaks

BMW has updated its M4 Competition Coupe and Convertible for 2024 in the face of renewed threat from the Mercedes-AMG C63 E-Performance and hardcore Audi RS4 Competition. The M4 gets a 20PS (15kW) power boost, light exterior revisions, new forged alloy wheels and an updated interior that includes the firm’s latest infotainment system – not bad for a car that’s already the clear class leader.

Potentially, the biggest fault line between you and M4 ownership (price notwithstanding) is its looks, and it’s fair to say the latest updates don’t change that. The M4’s headlights have been redesigned, and you now get laser-tech tail lights, but fundamentally, the 2024 car looks the same as the model it’s replacing.

Coupe buyers can go a step further by adding M Sport decals to the front and back of the car in either High Gloss Black or High Gloss Red.

Subtle updates are the name of the game on the inside, too, where you now get a flat-bottomed steering wheel with the option to have it heated and wrapped in Alcantara. Dark Graphite matt now trims large parts of the cabin.

The most significant change inside is the 14.9-inch curved and free-standing infotainment screen previewed in the new M2, powered by BMW’s latest 8.5 operating system, meaning most of the car’s functions can be controlled by voice.

Power increases from 510PS (375kW) to 530PS (390kW) thanks to a software update, meaning the coupe gets from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds (previously 3.9), and the Convertible does it in 3.7 seconds (formerly 4.5). Both are limited to a top speed of 155mph.

Production of the new M4 begins in March, with the coupe starting from £84,250 and the Convertible from £88,255.

BMW has also revealed details on the updated regular 4 Series, yours for £43,020 in coupe form or £49,695 for the Convertible.

They get a refresh on the outside with new headlights, laser tail lights, and a choice of new colours. Inside, you get the same curved infotainment screen as the M4, trim updates and a selection of redesigned steering wheels. You also get new M Performtex (velour-like) upholstery as standard.
