Caterham Cars sold to Japanese importer

Caterham has a new home and a new owner, having been bought by VT Holdings, a Japan-based automotive group. Don’t worry, though, the new custodians should ‘get’ what Caterham is all about.

Why? Well, VT Holdings chief executive Kazuho Takahashi is, in addition to the day job, a racing driver of 20 years, having driven regularly in JGTC, Super GT and Super Taikyu. The company has history with Caterham, too, with 12 years of being the Japanese importer for the Caterham Seven under its belt.

“Takahashi-san and the team truly understand the DNA of the Caterham brand, our heritage, our customers and our passions,” said Graham MacDonald, chief executive of Caterham Cars.

“As a team, we’re all excited about starting to write the next chapter for this very special brand.”

Takahashi-san is clearly very passionate about the company, its history and the product. “We have not only purchased a globally renowned performance car manufacturer but become custodians of a motoring legend,” he said. “We will protect and develop the Seven to meet the legislative challenges that lie ahead.”

It’s a rare moment when you can actually be excited that a small independent sportscar manufacturer with a very specific product has been acquired by a large company. This is one of those moments. We’ll tentatively say the future’s bright.
