Land Rover is offering its compact SUV customers a greater choice as its electrification roll-out spreads through its model ranges. As well as the P300e plug-in hybrids announced earlier this year, you can now get Land Rover’s latest hybrid technology of the non plug-in kind in both Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque.
As mild hybrids, the newcomers can’t drive on electricity alone but by combining a 48-volt starter-generator with a diesel engine they can stretch a gallon of fuel and cut emissions – CO2 outputs now start from 163g/km.
As well as being slightly cleaner they also provide more power than before. The updated electrified oil-burners are available in D165 and D200 (both numbers signifying power outputs in PS) for both the Evoque and Disco Sport. The petrol engines for the SUV duo come in P200, P250 and P300 forms and they are already equipped with the 48-volt booster.
Together they all make one of the most comprehensive SUV hybrid ranges available. Cabin technology gets a boost in these new models too, with all versions of the Disco Sport and Evoque benefiting from a new infotainment platform called Pivi and wide-ranging upgrades to connectivity, music streaming, wireless phone charging and over-the-air software updates. Land Rover says Pivi is transformative and makes the cars as easy to use as any smart phone.
In addition to that there are two new models to tempt. The Evoque Autobiography is the firm’s pinnacle compact SUV, full of luxury and style and available with a choice of hybrid power. Forsake some style for the Disco Sport and you can opt for the new sporting flagship Discovery Sport Black. This gets a body kit and 290PS Ingenium petrol engine for 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds.
Range Rover style and cachet or the more family-friendly appeal of the 5+2 seater Disco Sport? There’s not much between them on price – the new Evoques start from £32,100, the Disco Sport from just £185 less – but note that Autobiography and Black edition will both set you back more than that.
