The idea of slicing through traffic on blues and twos in a high-power police car appeals to all of us – it would be fun in a UK-issue BMW 530d, so imagine what it would be like in Italy where you could be handed the keys to a Lamborghini Urus Performante.
It sounds mad, but the Urus is the second Lamborghini on the Polizia di Stato fleet (this is Italy after all). Some lucky so-and-sos get to thunder up the Autostrade in a Huracán LP610-4 and before that, various Gallardos had put in a shift during their time on sale.
Admittedly, the Urus (which has a boot and space for more than two people) is an easier sell to the bosses back at HQ than a mid-engined supercar that’s only good for going quickly.
Not that the Urus is underwhelming in the performance department. Its twin-turbocharged V8 can whisk it from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds and on to 190mph, but the big SUV also has room inside for an organ fridge, armour-plated gun cabinet and a defibrillator.
Outside, its police livery has been designed in-house by Lamborghini Centro Stile and is topped off by blue lights and a two-tone siren.
“It is with great pleasure that we are continuing our twenty-year co-operation with the Italian State Police," said Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
"Knowing that our cars are used for public duties and, above all, for crucial operations to save human lives, can only make me and the whole company proud. These initiatives, which bring us great satisfaction, demonstrate our innate close ties with Italy.”
Automobili Lamborghini and the Italian State Police have collaborated since 2004, and the Urus Performante is the sixth model to enter into the Highway Police fleet.
