We may not be able to take a favourite car for a leisurely drive in the spring sunshine at the moment, tempting though that is, but anticipating such simple delights is (almost) as good… and that starts with deciding which car. So what would you choose as the ideal automotive treat, post the coronavirus lockdown? Bonhams the auction house has some ideas for you…
With its auction calendar on hold, Bonhams has found new ways to ensure collector cars can still be bought and sold, with the Bonhams MPH platform and the launch of Bonhams Private Sales. There is no shortage of machinery to tempt on both platforms, including these five beauties.
There are more expensive cars for sale with Bonhams, of course, but these five caught our eye. They'll be auctioned online on Saturday May 30th and Saturday July 25th, with a live auctioneer conducting the sales at Bonhams MPH base at Bicester Heritage.
Softer Jag Mk2 prices these days make this car, being sold by the actor Robbie Coltrane, temptingly affordable. Robbie has owned it for 22 years in which time it has been upgraded with a five-speed manual gearbox and improved brakes and steering. Two years ago a restoration of this car came with bills for £32,000. Enchanting.
If you didn’t know, fast Fords are big news these days, and the Escort RS2000 is one of the star performers. This car is definitely a star: it’s done just one mile since a nut and bolt restoration. Bonhams says RS2000s in this condition are rare indeed.
Fancy an 8.0-litre V10? Get a Viper! This one is a UK market car that’s had only one previous owner and just 29,500 miles on the clock. A blast in this will blow away the coronavirus blues.
Who hasn’t lusted after one of these at some time? Bonhams says this example has been looked after and upgraded in all the right places to make it more useable and long-lived. It has the big-block 7.2-litre V8 aboard which has been re-built with new pistons and bearings and fast road cam. Should go well then!
The vendor gives this car a score of 94 out of 100 and indications are here is a PDK automatic 911 coupe of the 997 series that has been well looked after all its life. It has done a modest 87,000 miles and comes with a full service history including recent new brakes all round, and a fresh MOT.
