It doesn’t take long for you to realise there’s something a little different about motoring in the USA, and as a European diving into American car culture there’s a lot to love. Walking around the cars up for grabs at the Bonhams Quail auction, it was impossible not to walk around, mouth open in astonishment, at some truly brilliant Stateside motors.
From Ford there was a Fairlane 500 Victoria Club Coupe, Humphrey Bogart’s Ford Thunderbird, a Model A, Model S and Model T, and more. From Chrysler we saw a 300-G Convertible and a 300-D, two mid-20th Century V8 heroes with bodywork that you’d never mistake for being anything other than American. There were two C2 Chevrolet Corvettes as well, plus a C3, and a truly superb GMC 100 Blue Chip V8 pick-up. Add to that cars from Oldsmobile, Winton, Packard, General Electric, Stutz, Pope-Hartford, Pierce-Arrow and more, it was an all you can eat buffet of the USA’s finest motors. Thank you, America, thank you.
