Groundbreaking platform unveiled by Stellantis

Built for D and E segment cars, according to Stellantis, the new platform “enables several segment-leading capabilities including embedded energy, charging efficiency, high-performance vehicle dynamics and Trail Rated off-road driving.” The new platform will underpin eight new models, due for launch between now and 2026.

The new platform can underpin a more diverse range of cars – from large family cars to crossovers, luxurious saloons, performance cars and seriously rugged SUVs – using a base set of componentry duplicated in multiple manufacturing plants.

The platform’s inherent flexibility means engineers can adjust its wheelbase, length, height, width, ground clearance, floor height, front and rear overhangs and more.

Larger cars making use of Stellantis' new platform could be ICE, EV, or hybrid with front, rear, or four-wheel drive, and there’s even space to accommodate a limited-slip differential. Battery packs will range from 85kWh to 118kWh, with charging speeds up to 4.5kWh per minute.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said: “Our goals for our STLA platforms are ambitious, but this is what our customers need from us today. Creating a family of vehicles from a well-engineered set of components that is flexible enough to cover multiple vehicle types and propulsions, overperforming any of our current products, will address each of our iconic brands’ customers.

“The flexibility and agility of this platform is its hallmark and will be a driving force for our success in the shift to electrification in North America.”

It’s the latest in a series of investments, seeing Stellantis spend €50 billion in electrification over the next decade as it aims for 100 per cent BEV sales in Europe by 2050. The first cars using the new platform will be revealed later this year.
