Harley-Davidson reveals revolutionary Sportster S

Back in 2017, Harley-Davidson announced an ambitious plan to launch 100 new motorcycles within 10 years. While efforts have been thwarted recently by the global pandemic, the wheels of change have certainly been turning, and Harley has launched a number of progressive models, including the Livewire (which has since branched off to become its own brand), and the Pan America.

And now, expanding on the Pan America’s new Revolution Max platform, the Milwaukee manufacturer has revealed the new Sportster S, a modern interpretation of the enduring stalwart of its line-up, which was actually dropped in Europe just last September due to tightening emissions.

But the grass wasn’t allowed to grow on its grave, with the new Sportster revealed last week, forecast to be in dealerships from September (costing from £13,995). Embracing the hunched, muscular shape that has become popular in recent years, the Sportster S is an amalgamation of a classic Bobber, and a flat track racer, with a high exhaust and chocolate satin magnesium engine covers lending a custom appeal. Three colour options of Vivid Black, Stone Washed White Pearl and Midnight Crimson will be available from launch.

It’s powered by the 1,252cc water-cooled 60-degree V-twin of the Pan America, complete with DOHC and a variable valve timing system. Featuring an altered top end to the Pan, it makes around 30PS (22kW), with torque, too, reduced, however 10 per cent more is delivered from 3,000–6,000rpm. The result is strong acceleration from the off, and ‘unrelenting, on-demand torque’ through the mid-range, with the 123PS (90kW) powerplant acting as a stressed member, thus reducing weight and making for a stiff chassis and precise handling. A welded tubular steel trellis swingarm adds further stiffening, and makes for an eye-catching highlight. The Sportster will be as accessible as ever, with a low seat height of 755mm, a wet weight of 228kg and reach-adjustable brake and clutch levers.

Premium suspension – adjustable 43mm inverted cartridge forks and hydraulically-adjustable Piggyback reservoir rear shock – work with the lightweight five-spoke aluminium wheels and oversized Dunlop tyres, while stopping power is provided by a Brembo radial Monobloc four-piston caliper on a single disc up front and a two-pot Brembo at the rear.

“The Sportster S is the next all-new motorcycle built on the Revolution Max platform and sets a new performance standard for the Sportster line,” commented chairman, president and CEO of Harley-Davidson Jochen Zeitz.

“This is a next generation Sportster defined by power, performance, technology and style. And it’s part of our commitment to introduce motorcycles that align with our strategy to increase desirability and to drive the legacy of Harley-Davidson.”

Technology is certainly prevalent on the new model, with riders afforded three ride modes of Sport, Road and Rain and two custom modes as well as cornering ABS and lean-sensitive traction control. Cruise control and a ‘proximity-based security system’ are standard equipment, while a LED lighting signature further enhances the look and safety.

A round, 4.0-inch TFT screen offers connectivity through the Harley-Davidson app, while there’s also an external ambient temperature sensor and a low-temp warning as well as two dedicated power points for heated riding gear and a USB-C. Optional equipment comes in the form of a sissy seat, a windscreen, mid-foot control conversion kit and luggage.
