No other automotive genre is as distinctly American as the over-sized pick-up truck. And there’s no ‘car’ more emphatically American than the over-sized pick-up truck that’s also massively over-powered. Enter the Hennessey Venom 775 F-150, the Ford-based truck from the Texas-based performance car maker.
How over-powered is the Venom? The 775 gives a clue: Hennessey has taken the F-150’s stock 406PS (299kW) 5.0-litre V8 and added 380PS (283kW). As well as nearly doubling the horsepower, the tuner’s changes have upped torque to 929Nm (685lb ft). That’s an increase of 373Nm (275lb ft). Chief among the changes to the Ford hardware are a twin-screw supercharger, revised engine management and freer-breathing throttle bodies.
Despite the Venom’s brick-outhouse dimensions, it’s capable of covering 0-62mph in a claimed 3.9 seconds, while the all-American benchmark of a quarter-mile is dispatched in 12.0 seconds with a terminal speed of 117mph. The turn of speed is thanks in part to its comprehensive use of the aluminium in its structure, making it relatively light weight. Emphasis on the word ‘relatively’. Drivers can choose between all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive.
Off-road performance has also been hotted up. The suspension has had a 6-inch lift, and it runs on Hennessey’s own 20-inch wheels that are wrapped in 35-inch tyres. It also has bespoke bumpers and an LED light bar. Just 100 Venoms will be produced, with prices around the $100,000 mark depending on specification.
Company founder John Hennessey said: “Our dedicated Ford customers have been eager for a showroom stock ‘TRX killer’ since Ram unveiled the truck. Our engineers have delivered with more horsepower, more torque and more capability – I could not be more pleased. Our new Venom 775 F-150 is faster and lighter than the factory TRX, and our order books are filling fast with F-150 fans determined to regain the high-ground.”
