Maserati resurrects Royale name for limited-run Quattroporte, Ghibli and Levante

Maserati has looked back to the 1980s for inspiration for a new series of limited-run luxury models: the Maserati Royale is back!

For a very select group (just 51 people) between 1986 and 1990 the Royale meant a bespoke ultra-luxury version of the then-current Quattroporte, complete with a mini bar in the back. It was intended as an appropriately regal model with which to mark the firm’s 60th birthday. The Royale range for 2020 might miss out on a bar but it follows the theme with a leather and wood luxury makeover and stack of  extra features as standard.

The new Royale is also available in Ghibli and Levante forms, as well as the Quattroporte. In 1986 the Royale was V8 powered but now all get V6 motors, either petrol or diesel, with power ranging from 272bhp to 424bhp.

Maserati says 100 Royales will be made only, across the three models. Recalling their 1980s namesake, all will be finished in either Blu Royale or Verde Royale, just as the original models were. Equally unique to the new models are the anthracite-finish 21-inch wheels and silver painted brake callipers.

It is inside that the new versions promise to impress the most. To the standard GranLusso trim are added high gloss trim inserts and either black Pieno Fiore leather or a new woven leather textile, called Zegna Pelletessuta. This is fashioned from thin strips of Nappa leather for a luxury feel that is also lightweight, soft and durable, says Maserati. From the pictures of the exquisite looking seats done out in this fabric, that’s the one we will be having…

A Bowers & Wilkins sound system, electric sunroof and privacy glass are fitted to all Royales. You also get the cold weather pack, premium pack and driving assistance pack included, bringing a host of safety and convenience items.

Then as now, though, it’s mostly about a bespoke new take on the sort of dynamic elegance that flows through Maserati’s rich heritage. It’s nice to have a new car with the echo of a special model from decades past, after all – complete with a “One of 100” plate in the interior.

The Royales come at pretty aristocratic prices, starting at £78,900 for the Ghibli, £85,300 for the Levante SUV and £103,150 for the Quattroporte. Order now and you can be practising your royal wave from your own Royale in March.
