McLaren Automotive has revealed that the car set to succeed the P1 at the top of the brand’s performance tree will be called the W1.
Continuing the lineage of the legendary McLaren F1, the new W1 will be revealed on the 6th October 2024, the 50th anniversary of McLaren’s first Formula 1 constructors’ and drivers’ championship triumphs in 1974 with Emerson Fittipaldi.
“The McLaren W1 is defined by real supercar principles and is the ultimate expression of a McLaren supercar,” said Michael Leiters, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive.
“Born of our rich racing history and World Championship mindset, W1 pushes the boundaries of performance and is worthy of the ‘1’ name. Like its predecessors the F1 and McLaren P1, W1 defines the rulebook of a real supercar.”
The new McLaren W1 will be revealed to the world at 13:00 BST on Sunday 6th October, hailing a new era for the manufacturer in much the same way that the P1 did in 2013.
Back then the P1, with its hybrid twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain, was inducted into the automotive ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. One thing’s for sure, the new W1 has some colossal shoes to fill.
