New BMW 5 Series Touring teased

As sure as night follows day, the launch of a new BMW 5 Series can mean only one thing – the new 5 Series Touring is just months away.

The new 5 Series Touring could be the last large estate BMW builds; Volvo (a purveyor of all things load-lugger for more than 70 years) has already pulled its estates from UK sale, and Mercedes is rumoured to follow, as the march of the SUVs continues unabated.

Thankfully, BMW hasn't thrown in the towel just yet, and proof of that comes with news that the Touring will get the same powertrains as the saloons – including pure-electric – an important USP in the fashion-conscious world of the large executive car class. Expect the electric Touring to offer up to 601PS (442kW) and a range of around 350 miles. It's a USP BMW will hold until the launch of the new Audi's A6 e-tron EV due for late next year.

That's all BMW has told us for now, but you can expect the new 5 Series to have a boot capacity of around 600 litres with the back seats up and 1,700 litres with them down. Meanwhile, the famous (in these circles at least) splitting tailgate – a 5 Series Touring feature as far back as the E34 (pictured) – will be carried over to the new model.

We'll have more on BMW's new load lugger as soon as we get it.
